Mental Disability and work?

I need to know and need help understanding how a mentally disabled person can have a job or is able to have a job?
My mom is mentally disabled and is on medication for bipolar depression for 6 years and has been told that she needs to be and is strongly advised to be on medication indefinitely since her health problem is very serious. We are waiting for a decision from the disability support program about her overall health and if she is qualified for a disability pension. My dad works overtime and is underpaid.
I am 19, female. I have finished studies.
I do not work because I need to be with and look after my mom all the time.
We live in Toronto, Canada, so I speak English (average).
My mom speaks English although very little, from the beginning she had trouble learning the language. She used to work as a babysitter and then a house cleaner before her health worsened and she had to be on medication.
She is taking medication before going to sleep as been told.
Being on it, she sleeps for about 9 to sometimes 10 hours, and has difficulty waking up and getting up. Mostly she wakes up around 10am. When we have an appointment to the psychiatrist once every 2 months or if we need to go somewhere earlier sometimes, she needs to be forced to wake up, and is still very tired and sleepy for the next few hours of the day.
I need to know how can my mom go to work if she gets up late, is tired and gets tired easily when doing simple housework?

Please let me know.

Thank you very much for your help.

Does she really need to be on all those meds? Maybe you should look into another psychiatrist? I mean, if she's a zombie, what kind of quality of life is that? And how can she work if she's that zoned out all the time---she might be overmedicated. It sounds like disability compensation would be the right thing but she obviously can't work like this and you need to have your life too.

hey i don't know much about this disease but my dad had Alzheimer's at a young age i'm only 14 and was taking care of my dad for 7 years before he past away recently and he struggled to get out of bed too, so what my mom and I did was we use to make him some tipe of small breakfast or Coffee in the morning (something he liked) and after that put him into the shower, he immediately was awake and active, im not shure if this will work in your situation but its worth a try, check out this website on treating bipolar naturally....Good luck =)

mental illness can be totally debilitating and disabling... to the point where normal life and normal function are totally out of the question.

so no, your mum can't just pull herself together and go out to get a cleaning job.
