I have had this habit since I was 10 or so, can never seem to stop. I am a guy in my 20's and I always feel the need to twirl my hair around my fingers- so much sometimes that it knots up. My hair is short, but I still do it. Weird thing is, I have such a strong urge to do it sometimes that I feel powerless to stop- what is it, an addiction? compulsion? I've heard of 'trichotilamania' or whatever, but I'm not pulling the hair out or anything close to that- just playing with it. Just kind of a nuissance and probably makes me seem a little strange sometimes. Is there a good way to stop/ stop feeling the urge to do this?

My son is 10 and he does the same thing. He just started about mid summer past. He has ADD and recently he was diagnosed with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). Perhaps you should look into those things and see if one or both of them may be your problem too. At the very least this seeking out of information will set you down the correct path which will take you to the answer you seek.

I hope this helps. Best of luck.

get something for your hands, such as a stress ball, or find a big annoying bracelet to wear that will remind you not to twirl your hair.

Shave it off! Keep it close cut for months.. see if you stop. find something else to fiddle with. like.. a pen or your own fingers.
