What makes mentally retarded people act the way they do?

What I mean, is like they make noises at random, or kick the air or just random stuff. Sometimes they'll just stare off in the distance or laugh for no reason. Also, they might slap themselves, then frown, then make a noise, then laugh, then jerk their heads, and scream, FOR NO REASON.

I have heard that they don't know they are doing, but I'm not so sure. I mean, how can you not know that you are yelling and kicking.

So, my question is, what drives mentally handicapped people to act the way they do.

first of all, this all depends on not only what kind of handicap they have, but also, what degree. for instance, there is autism, and downs syndrome, and many other types of retardation, but there are also many different degrees and kinds of each of these.

when they do something that you and i may think is for no reason, in their mind, there is a reason. just imagine your brain tells you to do certain things, so does theirs. because its weird to witness, doesnt mean there isnt a reason for it. sometimes, they arent able to express their wants and needs so it comes out as a scream or laugh or kick or whatever. sometimes t has to do with their emotions. sometimes, its a communication thing...like if you are doing something, and you start to talk to yourself. it all comes down to the fact that their brains work differently than ours.

its also interesting to think that mentally retarded people may be much happier in general than people without a mental handcap because they have much less to worry about and more to be happy about. yes, they may throw tantrums or get angry, but its usually about smaller things that they forget about later. they mostly dont have to worry about money problems, and other such stressful things.

Think of a small child who behaves like that. You cannot expect the child to sit at full attention and not cause a disturbance. Children often make noises at random, kick the air, stare off in the distance, or laugh for no apparent reason.

Now think of that child all grown up, but her mind has been stuck since the time she was very small. There has been little or no growth in that area. She is a perpetual child in a grown body who makes noises and the other things mentioned. She has not developed the social normality that she would have if her mind has not been stunted.

Well it depends on the disorder. Somebody with Downs syndrome will behave differently than somebody with autism or prenatal alcohol syndrome. Autistic people often do that because their sensory systems are abnormal Their brains are wired so that firm pressure and feedback like biting, slapping, kicking, or making loud noises feels good or brings relief, but light touch is sickening or unbearable and feels awful. So basically it depends on the disorder and there usually are underlying brain abnormalities that explain the behavior.

Nothing drives them to that point. Their brains don't function the same way that ours do, they aren't developed properly. It's not like they are bored and just want attention so they just start screaming. They really can't help it.
