Question:
antidepressants and suicidal thoughts?
?
Recently I began taking Citalopram, a generic antidepressant for clinical depression and I've been experiencing suicidal thoughts. I know you're supposed to go to your doctor right away, but I'm at college and my doctor is over two hours away. Could I go to urgent care or would I need to go to my doctor?

It's great that you are reaching out for help! We are so sorry to hear that are clinically depressed and feeling suicidal. Never give up on yourself; you are a valuable person.

We would suggest contacting your doctor so you can get some direction from him/her. Please contact 911 if you need immediate assistance. It may help you to talk to a counselor at hotline. Know that there is help out there for you and you are not alone.

Well you obviously had depression bad enough that you needed medication. Yes, some people can manage without medicatipns, but others can't. Doesn't make them "crazy." If ur having suicidal thoughts then yes, seek help immediately and the doctors there can adjust ur meds. Don't stop the meds cold turkey though because the symptoms can worsen. There is a crisis hotline out there as well or you can always dial 911, we don't take suicide lightly my dear.

Docs do hand them out like candy. They have to eat too. But there are people that genuinely need ssri medication. Its for a chemical imbalance that could be due to ANYTHING. Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors have also saved lives. Suicidal thoughts or actions are definitely a sign your not on the right medication for whatever your reason is. No you dont need to go to your primary care dr to get off it or to be put on something new or maybe a diff mg. But with an ssri u do need to tapper or be weaned of under medical supervision

Ya - this stuff kills people! There's a book out called "Medication Madness" by a psychiatrist who doesn't believe in dope. And the stories in there are pretty amazing. Doctors tend to pass out this anti-depressant like candy. Best thing to do is deal with the depression and say off the dope.

Hi, I would go to my closest ED department and tell them what this medication is doing to you....

This is sometimes the side effect of the drug...YES I KNOW....But don't leave it go NOW....

You don't need your doctor....if it is an emergency...as it is ....just go...

All the best
