Question:
Is taking more Seroquel than prescribed still considered drug abuse?

I am prescribed to take 400 mg, but I usually take 600 mg- 1000 mg. every night. Even though it causes bad side effects I don't want to lay awake at night. It isn't an addictive drug so is it really considered a drug problem?

Yes, it is considered drug abuse. Maybe you should talk to your psychiatrist/doctor about it.

I'm also on 400mg of Seroquel, and if I need to, I have the psychiatrists permission to take 200mg more. Maybe you can come to a compromise like that with your doctor.

Also, I recently found out through my case manager that a smaller dose of Seroquel is better for sleep than a larger dose. So maybe also consider that - unless, like me, you need the Seroquel for other reasons.

Another thing I recently started was Mirtazepine. Although it doesn't really make me feel sleepier, it does make me fall to sleep about 30 minutes faster than usual.

Good luck.

Im on seroquel too, so I totally get where youre coming from. Im prescribed 200mg, but sometimes when Im really stressed and just want to go to sleep I take an extra 100mg. Nothing bad has ever happened to me, but then again, I dont do it that often. I dont wanna say something bad is gonna happen to you, because Im not a doctor and dont know that for sure. But if you feel like you're relying on seroquel to sleep and you cant find another way, then I think thats considered mild drug abuse. Maybe you could talk to your doctor about how you want to sleep better at night? You can buy Melatonin at any drug store or walmart. Its a pill that usually comes in 1, 3, or 5mg. (well those are the only dosages Ive seen them in.) The chemical in your brain that helps you fall asleep is melatonin, so thats why its called that because it helps produce more of it.

Again, Im not a doctor but these were just some of my suggestions. But the best thing to do would be to talk to who prescribed you the seroquel.

Hope this helped(:

i actually know kids that do abuse it for that reason so they can sleep. taking more so you dont have to lay awake is to me anyways a problem and now that you have been taking a higher dose than prescribed you should go to your dr and be honest its for your own health you can get really sick from taking higher than prescribed mgs and also by being honest your dr may be able to find something else that will help you sleep but DO NOT take more than prescribed !

Yes because you are intentionally taking a higher dose than prescribed to induce a desired effect. Please bring this up with your doctor so he can either up your dose himself (1000mg is an extremely high dose by the way and may cause a lot of side effects) or prescribe you another medication to help with sleep.

It's wholly habit forming, sure they(doctors) would recall it drug abuse. Taking anymore than prescribed is regarded drug abuse(now-a-days) for those who ought to take greater than prescribed go to your essential care health care professional and tell him/her that you've got received a tolerance for them. When you out of the blue run out that you can endure some crazy hallucinagens and withdrawal symptoms. ..Which can be utterly no longer COOL.
