I have never understood that either. People would rather see on tv, the newspaper, etc a disaster instead of something good and nice.
Maybe it is the chaos, maybe they have a need to feel something and the only thing that can shock them into feeling is something sad, maybe it is a feeling they get as to how bad life really isn't compared to what they just heard.
I think it fits into the catagory that misery loves company?

I don't beleive all people are attracted to sad news. But to those who do, it think it is the empathy within us. We put ourselves in a persons misfortunate shoes for the moment and our heart aches for them. Perhaps we recall a time when we were also in pain, and can relate. In other instances, i think that some people are drawn to to sadness and misfortunate incidents because of the hightened emotions there, perhaps not empathizing, but more feeding off of the chaos and emotions of those dealing with the sad event. Still others i beleive, automatically offer condolences or a "im so sorry" as an automated and expected response.Athough i would like to think that we all have empathy :)

Sad news is all around us it comes to us in the TV or the radio or news print....
Not sure if one is drawn to it or not but it's kind of toxic in a sense...I would prefer not having it. I listen to KLOVE radio that is positive and encouraging radio and music I love it.
I also have typed in the computer Good news stories and I enjoy that too. I try not to read the paper if possible or watch the news here on the TV. It's all depressing and draining to view.
Do you remember a song long ago that says something about wanting to hear a little good news ?
Or the one by Don Henley "Dirty Laundry" sometimes our world is like that at times too.

I dont know. I dont read the news much and I never listen to the news on TV unless something big is happening because I dont want to hear it.
Also - I believe there are a lot of petty people who love to gossip.

Octopus have an particularly short existence. The upgrading of Paul replaced into yet another fallacy created by the western media; U do no longer ought to shed tears. Octopus has to die in an aquarium in straightforward terms.!

Usually because it makes people's pathetic lives feel a lot better. Poor people who watched the Hurricane Katrina disaster could take a step back and say "hey, we didn't get that bad a deal after all."

why does traffic slow down to see what the damage was after a accident. misery loves company or at least ppl who are more miserable. we want to know that there are ppl worse off than we are.

It's in my comfort zone.
If it's good, I'm not used to it, so I push it away.
