What's better Xanax or Ativan?

I currently take 1mg of Ativan for anxiety but want to know if switching to Xanax would be any better. I never understand why people abuse Ativan since it doesn't make me feel any different. Does Xanax give you that happy feeling stuff like percocet gives?

I've heard of Ativan but never been prescribed to it. However, I'm prescribed to Xanax and I have found it to work pretty well it terms of eliminating anxiety. Xanax gives me a happy feeling, only when taking higher doses (3 mg)...I was prescribed to little .25 mg ones. Oh and it would give you a sleepier feeling more than a happy one. Or both depending on the person. I recommend Xanax but I wouldn't take it every day, only days you're feeling really stressed, anxious, or pissed off.

Good luck!!

each person is unique in the way a drug affects their body. I do know that Xanax will not give you the happy fuzzy feeling you get from painkillers. It is good you can't understand why people abuse ativan because that makes me think you don't have the potential to abuse it, which is a problem with all types of people prescribed benzos.

If your ativan is working, then there is no point in changing meds. ANd if it is not working, perhaps your Dr. can up the dose before trying a diff medication.

With that said, I highly highly recommend never trying xanax. It's abused way more than ativan.

I've taken both for severe panic attacks that I have due to a debilitating disease. Ativan made me feel funny, and it made everything taste strange. Xanax helps my panic attacks, but doctors say it is addictive. I do know that if you are on Xanax for a long time, you have to gradually get off of it. It doesn't make me happy. If you are depressed, you wouldn't want xanax, maybe Abilify.
WTF??

Xanax you can feel the calm come on, they give you that kind of I don't care but I am happy feeling. Your doc will probaly keep you on ativan~ Its less addicting than xanax and not as strong. I started on xanax and my doc switched me to ativan after three months on the xanax for the fear of me being addicted. I rarely take the ativan anymore, sometimes just to help me sleep. I stopped taking my zoloft 5 months ago (was on it for 5 years), and boy do I feel different and better!! I actually feel things now and have just enough sass. If you have an addictive personality stick with the ativan, the xanax is highly addictive.

I took Xanax for two weeks before my doctor switched me to Klonopin, but I also had Ativan in the E.R. for a panic attack. Ativan was more potent in my opinion than Xanax, or at least comparable. If Ativan doesn't make you feel any different, it's probably because you've developed a dependence and Xanax probably won't do much else. You have to remember these are all the same class of drug.

Everyone is saying how much they love Xanax, but these are all people who probably take Xanax once a week at most. If your doctor is prescribing your medication for daily use, you will enjoy Xanax for about a week and then it will be all over with. To be honest, daily use of Xanax and Ativan is not very common because they lose their effectiveness and are incrediibly addictive. Those are the two drugs people go to for panic attacks. Klonopin won't give you the euphoria you're clearly looking for, but it's much safer and more effective for longer term anti-anxiety relief. If your anxiety is mild, then you should consider asking your psychiatrist about Effexor XR or Paxil CR which are antidepressants approved to treat generalized anxiety and social anxiety as well.

Ativan is highly addictive. Just be careful. Good luck.

There is no such thing as a "better" drug. There is only what works for you. Both ativan and xanex have a high risk of dependency, and if you're looking for a "happy feeling" or a "high" from your anti-anxiety medication you're doing it wrong. These drugs are supposed to reduce your anxiety, so you can manage it, not make you high.

Yeah.. sounds like youre trying to get a buzz and not control anxiety. Let me tell you a bit about benzodiazapines.. (xanax, valium, ativan, klonapin)

Benzodiazapines are highly addictive, and worse yet.. if you take them for an extended period of time and abuse them.. You can die from the side effects. There are only two drugs in the world that people can die from, because of withdrawls. Alcohol and Benzos. Something called Dilerium Tremens happens. And it can kill you. So, I would say, learn some coping mechanisms, and get off the benzos unless you really need them to function. But from your "happy feeling stuff like percocet" statement tells me your just a junkie.

No - Xanax didn't seem to do much for me

Just get happy on your own

When you find yourself thinking negative thoughts - conciously change them and repeat them to yourself, i.e. when I'm beat and say I'm tired - I reverse it and say - I am not tired, I am fine - I feel good and make an effort to smile - just the act of smiling will help you feel better

Xanax is great. but it is highly addicitve, and the withdrawls are really bad. they wont give it to you for longterm use. I take it for flying and it is excellent.

ok im sitting here reading all these comments and im pissed off! i have extreme anxiety and the depression i have is strickly from the anxiety and not being able to work anymore or even go out of my house, im upset cause someone said these are addicting the ativan? ha what a joke i take three only when i need to get out and go to store to shop, doctor visit things like this not every day!!! only as needed but thats because i am having to go around this anxiety to lived but please dont think that us people that have to take this crap are addicted or trying to get a buzz, i know i hate feeling tired and dont remember things ive done, i have my grand daughter alot and i love being there in mind and spirit but if i have to go to store or emergency room or court or dentist i have to take these slow acting pills but they are not addicting!! my brother died last yr at 51 the doctors gave him methadone and he was a full blown alcoholic but they also gave him ativan and he died, i know for a fact he just wanted whatever he could get his hands on and paid the price died at 51 RIP but as for me...i only take as needed so i have to plan alot of my stuff on days that i take them otherwise i like to spend the rest of my time enjoying life at home without ativan!!! if i had it my way i would take nothing!!! i have been taking ativan for over a year and it really doesnt do anything really i still get sick before i go anywhere it just mellows me out later in the day by then i can really do all the stuff ive needed to do but by then im ready for a nap
