Theoretically there are a number of ways. If you have a Dr, counselor or someone like that then they can refer you. Or you can go a&e/ER if you feel you urgently need to be in a hospital. If you can afford it you can go private and go to a place you have to pay for, I am sure you would have no problems being admitted then.

In my experience though (and after reading the response above maybe this is a UK thing) you only get offered help like being in a MH if you don't want it. I suppose because there is limited funding and only the people who are too sick to realise they need help like that will get it. If you are well enough to ask for it I guess you are not sick enough to need it in the eyes of those who have to worry about budget etc. So it is actually quite hard to get into a MH. They will still offer you help though. When I was in crisis they sent me home from a&e but they also sent the on call psych round to check on me over the weekend until I could see my care co-ordinater. Also, I had someone with me who could look after me for a few days. A friend of mine was kept in for a few nights because she lived alone.

I'm not sure how things work in your area, but here in W.V., you can either go to a psychiatrist or a psychologist and tell them that you need to be admitted, or you can go straight to the hospital and admit yourself to the Behavioral Health Unit at the hospital. We don't actually have mental hospitals here anymore, with the exception of the State Hospital, but our regular hospitals all have psychiatric units (we are supposed to call them behavioral health units to be politically correct). We have them for adults and young adults. You have the option of checking yourself in in which case you can leave when the doctor thinks you are ready to leave, or someone else can check you in in which case you have to stay for no less than 30 days. Also, family members can have mental health warrants sworn out for you in which case you are picked up by the State Police and admitted for no less than 30 days as well. The easiest way is to be referred by a doctor.

You can go to the Emergency Department at your local hospital and ask to speak to the on-call psychiatrist. They will usually bring a nurse or member of a Crisis Resolution Team with him to assess you. If it's deemed necessary they can arrange for a voluntary admission, if they deem it necessary and you refuse to go into hospital you can be sectioned under the Mental Health Act.

If you really need it, hospital can be a good place of safety as you can get help straight away and a proper assessment and treatment. If you don't really need to be in hospital, try not to go down that route as it's not the best place to be as many are really quite ill and it can be disturbing. I've been in a few times and at first it was really helpful, but as I was getting nearer to discharging and getting better, others were in a bad way and disrupted the ward quite a lot.

If you're in the UK then it very difficult, even if you are suicidal (they sent me home and told me to see the gp!). They will list 100's of reasons but essentially it comes down to budget, it costs too much to actually give you the help you need.

The around it is to see your gp or pysch (if you have one, I don't somehow grrr nhs), and talk to them about it, and say why you want to go. Chances are they'll fob you off with medication or the crisis team. If you think you really need to see somebody now, show up at A&E and tell them you're in mental crisis and need to see the on duty pyschiatrist.

This is for the UK, sorry if you're from somewhere else, and I don't know how the system works for others.

A normal GP can section you under the mental health act I think he has to fill in a form which is at least 10 pages long and he can ask for police assistance if needed

You first need to be referred to the hospital by your therapist.

Then you go to the hospital for a short stay called an "assessment" while they decide if you need to enter a programe.

Pass the assessment and you're in!

if you are looking to go to a mh all you would have to do is go to a counsling center and tell them that you would like to be admitted to one because you have bad thoughts and you want help...if you do that then they will take care of all your paperwork and stuff to get you into one
