Actually there is no black and white to what constitutes the amount of support that someone else needs.

Maybe this person already goes to NA meetings but is looking for a little help in their online world as well.

http://www.whatwinnersdo.com is my personal addiction recovery site. I am recovering from an opiate addiction. Please feel free to use this as support.

The first step in N/A is We are powerless over our addiction and our life has become unmanagable. They have to reach out when they are ready, not until then. Sometimes they have to reach the bottom of the well before they look up and see the light. I am only on step 3 so i am not in a position to help except to say there are N/A groups all over. And for every possible ethnic, social, religious background. Me I follow the 12 step with Native American culture woven into the 12 steps

first it depends on how long you have been clean i know in narcotics annon. and alcoholic annon. you should be clean 1 year before you can be someone's sponser. i picked a sponser who was clean 5 years . you want someone who is SERIOUS about staying clean. the internet is not the place to hold your own "on line" addiction recovery. that is why there are meetings for addicts and recovering addicts. there is a code of ethics you have to follow in treatment ( steps and traditions ) even tho this person is not "advertising" to give support to someone. a lot of things that are said and done over the internet as with anything else can get into the hands of hackers and i'm sure this person does not want his/her life story plastered all over the internet. meetings are mostly closed to addicts and its a safe place to verbally come clean with out the info leaving a meeting. if this person is serious about recovering, he/she should go to a meeting in thier hometown and find a sponser there not on the internet

i think better than email support would be to go to an NA meeting and get some support from people that you can call at 3 am when an urge to use strikes. over the net, you never know when people are gonna check their email and get back to you.
