Question:
Are ADD and ADHD real afflictions or are they just how someones personality is?

I know that ADD and ADHD are "chemical imbalances" that cause people to be overly energetic, but how do we know that the chemicals in our brain are what gave us our personalities (aggressive, passive, energetic, etc.) so would giving someone medication to suppress these "symptoms" be guilty of wanting to use artificial means to change the personality of their child because it does not meet their expectations?

Thx for the feedback, just wondering about anyone else"s input on the subject.

People have been referring to themselves as ADD/ADHD alot lately, lol. Some people claim they have it, when really, they just talk alot or are hyper active. Although, some people take them seriously, and think that talking alot or being hyperactive is what ADD/ADHD is, but it isn't. That is just what some symptoms are. That actual disorder is when you have trouble concentrating, and can't focus, or get distracted very easily. When people who don't have it say they do, that gives it a label, and makes other people confused.

Also, the medicine for ADD doesn't make you talk any less, or any less active, all it does is help you focus better, which is the intention of why you should be taking the medicine. Medication for ADHD although does make you a little less hyper active, although, definetely doesn't "change your personality". It just helps them to fidget less, and interupt, etc. I understand where you get this idea.

Hope this helps!

Hi, I'm 16 and try to be mature, but really i'm quite an immature little boy. I have ADHD but i don't want to go around telling everyone about it because i don't want have an excuse for my personality.

I'm a quick thinker (I'm great at problem solving), i'm totaly random, I'm fun to be around, I'm creative and i'm generally a positive, kind and caring person.

However i have a low level of concentration and focus, i go all "spaced out" sometimes, i get easily distracted, i talk non-stop without realising, I have a really short fuse, i have a really bad memory and i have a bit of a problem with sugar (i go crazy and jokey and insensitive and i become really irritating).

I don't like the thought of medication. I'm not against the idea of it. If someone really wants to concentrate and focus better to perform as well as they can, they should go for it. But i do hate the idea of pushy parents deciding whats best for their kids. "It thier life, so back off!!"

I'm happy to stay like i am without getting pumped up with loads of drugs that turn me into something i'm not. I'm a popular guy, many people enjoy my company and find my, lightning fast, random comments Hilarius. I just about manage to get by in 6th form and i enjoy my life.

I think that if i didn't have ADHD i don't think i'd be as immature and fun. I'd be just another boring and robotic member of society.

what adam said is very well and good and most of it is tue however altering the chemical balance of the brain could very well alter a person's personalty and many other things. changing the chemical balance is a little like playing god with a person because of the changes that person might make a different choice in life.

Chemical imbalance is a lie - you can hear it from professor of psychiatry in one of the video - no-one has yet measured what kind of chemicals and their amounts and ratios are in a brain of a sane/insane person - person with a disorder etc. Check these videos. It's fascinating - absolutely fascinating - this whole fraud.

Dr. Mary Ann Block

"Because of my medical training, my goal as a physician is to look for and treat the underlying conditions causing the patient’s problem, rather than just covering up those symptoms with drugs. I have seen and treated thousands of children from all over the United States, who had previously been labeled ADHD and treated with amphetamine drugs. By taking a thorough history and giving these children a complete physical exam as well as doing lab tests and allergy testing, I have consistently found that these children do not have ADHD, but instead have allergies, dietary problems, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems and learning difficulties that are causing their symptoms. All of these medical and educational problems can be treated, allowing the child to be successful in school and life, without being drugged."

Quote:

"Even when Ritalin is used as prescription drug, it may have severe side effects including nervousness, insomnia, anorexia (eating disorder), pulse changes, heart problems and weight loss. The manufacturer says it is a drug of dependency.

In June 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a series of public health advisories warning that Ritalin and drugs like it may cause visual hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, psychotic behavior, as well aggression and violence behavior."
