There are no medical/biological/objective tests for any psychiatry mental illness or disorder.

Watch few minutes video with Dr. Mary Ann Block to find answers you are looking for.

Dr. Mary Ann Block

"Because of my medical training, my goal as a physician is to look for and treat the underlying conditions causing the patient’s problem, rather than just covering up those symptoms with drugs. I have seen and treated thousands of children from all over the United States, who had previously been labeled ADHD and treated with amphetamine drugs. By taking a thorough history and giving these children a complete physical exam as well as doing lab tests and allergy testing, I have consistently found that these children do not have ADHD, but instead have allergies, dietary problems, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems and learning difficulties that are causing their symptoms. All of these medical and educational problems can be treated, allowing the child to be successful in school and life, without being drugged."

Here is a little taste of ADHD drugs like Ritalin

You can find facts about Ritalin in this booklet which is available on-line.

It is the fifth booklet from left

Quote:

"Even when Ritalin is used as prescription drug, it may have severe side effects including nervousness, insomnia, anorexia (eating disorder), pulse changes, heart problems and weight loss. The manufacturer says it is a drug of dependency.

In June 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a series of public health advisories warning that Ritalin and drugs like it may cause visual hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, psychotic behavior, as well aggression and violence behavior."

Hi there,

Firstly, ADHD tends to affect more boys then girls, though girls do have diagnosis of ADHD.

Lots of theories about origins of ADHD. Perhaps the most important fact you should capitalise on, is it is not a disease! You cannot catch it like flu. There is research that suggests there is a biological/genetic basis for the condition, some would argue it can run in families. I have also come across research which suggests birth trauma when the child is born can be instrumental in ADHD. And of course, there are also those who dismiss it's very existence, citing bad parenting!! (so not true). Therefore, causes of ADHD, you cannot truly pinpoint..

Symptoms, you'll get these from the books, ICD 10, and DSM 1V. Briefly just a few are, fidgeting, unable to sit still, blurting out answers, distractedness, distracting behaviour, talking non-stop like a motor, unable to concentrate, unable to sleep, disorganised, forgetful (short-term memory affected) daydreaming, unable to sit for prolonged periods of time.

Can't prevent ADHD however the implementation of certain interventions such as for school;teachers checking child knows what is required, giving simple instructions and positive praise have been found helpful. Many different drugs are available in the management of ADHD too. Commonest known is Methylphenidate Hydrochloride (Ritalin) also Melatonin which helps with the child sleeping - though a child with ADHD can still stay awake after taking Melatonin - Melatonin is NOT a sleeping pill.

Various assessments are needed to see if a child has ADHD (usually becomes apparent around school age but, as a rule, medical professionals will wait until the child is around 6 to diagnose). The Conners Scale is used. Parents fill this in as does the main teacher of the child whom has the most contact with him/her. A Psychiatrist Paedatrician will look at all the available evidence ie//what parents have said, the Conners Scales and will deduce from that whether the child has ADHD. It is a long process though.

One last point to note, many of the symptoms of ADHD run on a spectrum, that is, no one child with ADHD will be exactly the same as another child with ADHD - kind of like with Autism.

Also, contrary to popular belief, ADHD does remain into adulthood.

Hope this helps and good luck with your project, please check out the things I have mentioned, do a Google Books search if you are really stuck and you'll find the answers (as mentioned in a previous posting, you MUST reference the work/things you refer to) :)

1. What are the signs of ADHD? Difficulty concentrating, underachieving at school, not being able to concentrate when doing things you enjoy like reading a book or playing games. Hyperactivity, being very loud, being unable to sit still or stay seated, not being able to consider the consequences of your action, being in trouble all the time, having very little self control, not being able to be patient and wait turns.

2. What kind of people get ADHD? ADHD affects all races equally. It is diagnosed more often in countries like the USA because more doctors recognize it. More boys have ADHD than girls but this is also the same for most conditions affecting the brain including Autism and learning difficulties. Lots of girls are also diagnosed with ADHD. You are born with ADHD and in most cases you have it for your whole life, although 1 in 5 will outgrow the condition in adulthood.

3. What are the causes? ADHD is caused my an electrical/chemical problem in the brain. The part of the brain responsible for self control and focus does not produce as many chemicals as it should. It is a genetic condition and you are born with it. But it is recessive so if a parent has the ADHD gene there is only a 1 in 3 chance their child will have it.

4. What are the symptoms? There are three main symptoms.

Attention deficit - difficulty concentrating and paying attention, short attention span. easily distracted.

Hyperactivity - Being excessively active and loud.

Poor impulse control - little self control and not considering the consequences of your actions.

5. How can you prevent ADHD? It is impossible to prevent ADHD, it is an in born condition. By the time doctors know you have it you've had it for years. It can be treated with medication to improve the symptoms though. But the condition cant be cured.

6. When do you get tested for it? You can be tested anytime usually kids are taken to be tested when their parents or teachers are worried about their behavior and learning. But you can be diagnosed as a pre school child, child teenager or even an adult.

7. How do you get tested for it? In some countries they use a brain scan to test for it. In other countries careful consultations including medical check ups, tests, observation and interviews are used to diagnose ADHD.

How can you tell if you or a loved one has Adult ADD/ADHD? Diagnosis can be challenging, especially since many conditions show similar symptoms. For example, if you are depressed or anxious, you might struggle with procrastination, irritability, or trouble concentrating. Or if you did not learn organizational skills while growing up, you might have trouble keeping your house clean or remembering appointments. While the final diagnosis comes from evaluation from a skilled professional, hallmarks of adult ADD/ADHD include similar childhood symptoms and persistent adult symptoms that interfere with work and relationships, even through the ups and downs of life. Symptoms of Adult ADD/ADHD include
