Yes- and it drives me NUTS!! I HAVE to add up the numbers in telephone numbers on tv - I have to add up the number of letters in words and sentences. Mine have to end in 5's or 0's - sometimes 9's are okay too. I miss half the show I'm watching because I'm too busy counting in my head. I have to make sure to take the same number of steps with each foot in a particular room. I have to make sure to eat the same amount of food on each side of my mouth.

It drives me nuts - and I have no idea why I do it or why I can't stop!

Yes, I am bi-polar and my compulsion is counting steps, clock ticks, up by 5's on the miles per hour in my car.

I count everything! Does not bother me any more though.

RE:

OCD and counting?

I recently found out I have OCD. I count all the time and have to come up with an odd number. I describe it as when I look at something I diascet it into numbers. I don't look at an object and say "oh there is an entertainment center" I count the whole object piece by piece. Does...

OCD counting is very common. If it's really bothering you it's always smart to see a therapist, they can help you a lot!

I have OCD tendencies but not OCD. I draw things with my thumb and index finger, no one knows im doing it but i do it 70 percent of the time. Especially when I am uncomfortable or nervous about something.

I also suffer from OCD & counting is my #1 compulsion. I count almost everything. For example, everywhere I drive I will count every telephone poll which I pass. If I pass 37 on my way to work, I must pass 37 on my way home. All poles passed when going somewhere are considered positive; therefore, all poles on the way home are considered negative. Their sum must be a value of 0 for me to be able to go home.

I also count lights, carpet patterns, stairs, & even the number of hairs on my own head. This becomes very debilitating after a while; however, I am learning how to fight my compulsions through CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy).

I suggest that you consider seeing a doctor, if you haven't already, before things get overwhelming for you. Good luck & don’t worry about counting the words… already did! There’s 150.

How did you discover that you have OCD? Was this through self diagnosis or did you see a psychologist who gave you this diagnosis? If you saw a psychologist, you should ask them for the particular treatments and statistics if you're interested. If you did not see a psychologist, I would not just to the conclusion that it is OCD. Perhaps you are just partial to numbers and that is just the way your personality is. OCD is supposed to harm your quality of life and impede you from functioning normally. It is a disorder, not just a mild discomfort. For more information see a psychologist or consult the DSM-V if you have access to one. Good luck.
