I'm a 16-year old girl, and I've been really really sad lately, and looking down on myself a lot, and I barely have any self-esteem... How would I know if I have depression?

I'm the kind of person who won't tell her mom stuff like that too, cause like yours, she would freak out too and try to put me on some kind of medication!

I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard when you're depressed ((my mom suffers from it)) you pick scabs a lot. Not like normal people who will sometimes itch a scab or pick one to get it off, but they'll pick as many as they can find. But like I said, I'm not sure if thats true.

Also, you'll always feel upset. Probably staying inside all day not interacting with anyone.

Usually when I start feeling depressed, it's because I've been eating a lot of unhealthy stuff and not getting enough sleep. I think that's why I'm more depressed during the summer.

Look, I'm 18 years old so I am not too much older than you. I can tell you from experience, that there are levels of puberty that you don't get to until you are almost 20. I know that I went through a big "sad phase" when I was about your age. It lasted about 3 months...but I got over it and I am fine now. I do go through these week long phases where I am really down on myself but It always gets back to normal.Just keep tabs on it and If this continues over 6 months, I would consult a doctor. Good luck!

You may just have the blues. Common symptoms of depression include: having the blues, can't sleep or sleep too often, loss of appetite or over-eating, irritability or short-tempered. If these symptoms last for what seems to be an excessive amount of time, you should contact your doctor.

I would not call it depression in that more of friends departed, and you care and think of them. I have lost people in life but memories are good and life goes on I'm 52. all the best.
